Dear Future Students

I took this class spontanously because it sounded really cool and really fun, but here are things I learned along the way…..

  1. Don’t put things off for Friday!!! – I’m telling you its not fun
  2. The assignment banks are so fun, do the ones that interest you the most because if you choose ones that don’t, then it’ll be super hard.
  3. Daily Creates – don’t wait until the last three days to do them because you’ll get stuck with crappy ones!
  4. Have fun doing this class – don’t think about it as a stressful project.
  5. I know it seems like a lot of work – but I promise it is not too bad!!
  6. Take this class with one friend – you’ll have to do projects and it’ll be extra fun if you have a friend.

This class is really fun if you treat it that way! Best of luck!!

Never stop dreaming

Day 1:

I moved out West to make a new life for myself, I have never felt like I belonged in the Hampton’s. My heart just yearned for a different adventure than the one I was born in. I am a dreamer, and once I set my mind on something, I take action. My dream was always to be a teacher, but not a teacher to students who have a lot of money. I want to be more than a teacher, I want to mentor students and inspire them to want to learn. My sisters and I have always been different, Rebecca wants to marry a constable she loves living on the wild side and she’s not a worrier, so it makes sense. Katherine wants to marry a duke, earn all her riches through him and live in a beautiful estate. Thats not the life I chose for myself, I set out west to pursue my teaching dream.

I had finally made it, Saint Valley. It was beautiful, the way the children ran with laughter, mothers got together and talked for supper. Husbands walked together to the coal mines to feed their families.

Life in the valley was slower, it was nothing like the Hampton’s where everything went fast. It was either fast pace or nothing, people dressed to impress and I had always felt like that was not me. In the valley women dressed beautifully, and simple. Plain colors, with beautiful skirts and blouses. When I first stepped in, people looked at me like I was a princess.

?When Calls the Heart? tells the captivating story of Elizabeth Thatcher, a young teacher accustomed to her high society life, who receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley, a small coalmining town where life is simple, but often fraught with challenges. Abigail Stanton, a wife and mother whose husband, the foreman of the mine, along with a dozen other miners, has just been killed in an explosion. The newly widowed women find their faith is tested when they must go to work in the mines to keep a roof over their heads. Elizabeth charms most everyone in Coal Valley, except Constable Jack Thornton who believes Thatcher?s wealthy father has doomed the lawman?s career by insisting he be assigned in town to protect the shipping magnate?s daughter. Set against the wild canvas of a 19th century coal town, Elizabeth will have to learn the ways of the frontier if she wishes to thrive in the rural west on her own. As soon as I stepped out of the stagecoach a sweet man caught my eye. He was wearing red, it seems as though he was a big deal. A woman named Monica comes up to me and mentions that he is a constable. A man of danger, the constable comes up to me and tells me his name is Adam. But boy is he dreamy.when-calls-the-heart-daniel-e1399224603801

Day 2:

My first day on the job was today, the kids treated very well, they laughed at me (or maybe with me?). There is something sweet about these children, they all seem to have some sort of hope. Some believe they are not as smart as they are. But thats why I took on this job, to inspire children to want to learn and feel loved. Sometimes I feel like these children don’t get enough love. As far as the constable, well only time will tell. We keep running into each other and making small talk. We shall see where the world takes us whether its apart or to each other. As far as the future, only God knows what is coming next, I don’t know where my next adventure will be, but I know I want it to be somewhere warm. Somewhere were the sun is shining and there is no worries. Somewhere like https://www.pinterest.com/mrivasbe/dream-vacation/

All I know is that I am very happy with the valley, I feel as though I am at home. I know I’ll be staying for a while, the children are the ones who inspire me. They always will be, and again tomorrow is a new adventure but until then I will write tomorrow!

Assignments: For the final I used Web, Audio, Writing and Animation to put my final project together. Enjoy and Happy Summer!

Final Paper Progress

For our final project we are supposed to create a story through four different medias. I am thinking of keeping the same theme I have talked about with my character. While I probably won’t incorporate my character, I am going to write about a love story. A story about a man and woman who weren’t supposed to fall in love but they did and have to go through all these trials in order to okay. For the four categories of Assignment Banks I will use writing, to write out the whole story and along the ride I will incorporate the other three. So as I am writing out the story, I will use audio, visual and video assignments to describe my story.

I will probably be using audio at the start of my story, then start writing it out. Then I will use gifs or photos as visual assignment and then I want to incorporate a video as a commercial in between my story.

Ps. Im really glad we don’t have to do any more daily creates!!

Weekly Summary 11

This week we focused on creating our video. We had to incorporate our characters once again but we came up with the idea to do a puppet show. After much thought into the show we came up with bull  business.

This week was simple and just focused on the video which I really liked. I am so glad I didn’t do the assignment banks. I was only able to do two daily creates so here is number 1 and here is number 2. Over all i enjoyed that the week was chill and didn’t have any intense stuff.

Audio Storytelling

A movie would be nothing without sound, most of us don’t realize how big of a difference a movie would make without sound. Not only just the actual language but the intensive sounds it goes along with it. Ira Glass suggest the antidote which follows one another, so one way to incorporate sound is by putting sounds together that could flow easily into a story. Even if it goes from a slow melody, to a quick one to a scary one. He even mentions that the most boring story could be turned into a really strong one with the sound of music.

Ira talking about sounds made me think of Stagecoach because while it was dragging to watch the movie, the sounds and different emotions really were the reason why I stayed put for the movie. The musicality in each of the roles voice made the movie. When a character was happy their voice would high pitch, when they’re angry their pitch would go faster. There is a lot of different techniques that could be put into making sound demos. I thought moon graffiti was a great representation of what music should sound like when embedded into talking. When the background is not too loud to hear the person talking but also quiet enough and suspenseful to go with the flow.

  • I listened on Wednesday for the radio show, and heard my own voice! Which was really cool, but not really in my field. The story was dry and hard to understand but sometimes would catch my attention when the banging and gun stuff. I liked the commentary I left, I wanted to make it funny and exciting. I did feel really awkward when I misspelled the car name….whoops 🙂

Radio Show Ideas

So for my radio show I was thinking of incorporating a bunch of different western girls and maybe each talking about their experiences in the rodeo. Girls are mostly seen as weak or “can’t handle the pressure.” So what I could do is get a bunch of ladies and talk about their experiences wether they are good, or bad.

Another thing idea could be how growing up being a girl cowboy could be. So I could get a guest and ask her questions about her experience growing up was. Or if they had friends whose families weren’t in the rodeo spotlights.

Western Character

The Western Belle,

Boy is she pretty, with long wavy hair, blue eyes and some great cowboys boots. Every boy drools over the western belle because she is a lady but when its time to rodeo its like she’s is a different person. She knows how to stay on a bull and fight like a cowboy. She grew up with a bounty hunter for a father, so that is where she gets her strenght and without a mother. Her aunt was always the one to teach her how to use womanly supplies, to be proud of herself and fight like a woman. Every young girl wants to grow up to be the western belle. She is 30 years old, but not married. Basically trying to find a nice cowboy who treats her well.

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

YEEHAW! Damn cowboys I just got into a shootout with a bunch of city-slickers. But boy were they bad, they thought they could yonder to my barn and cahoot my horses! No son of a gun gets past me! So I took out my pistols and put my hat on (to show them I was serious) and shot them straight with a bullet. But not at the just pretended to so they got scared. Those half-wits ended up in the calaboose when I called my buddy whose a cop. To celebrate I wet my whistle and rode off with Buddy the horse, and here I am looking at this beautiful sunset remember my victory. God bless

To my riser

Riser (according to Dierks Bentley): life is hard, man, and you’ve got to give it your all to succeed

My family moved to the U.S when I was 8 years old, we came with nothing. We lived in a one bedroom apartment with 5 people, and started off with nothing. Yet somehow, it never felt like that. There was always food on the table, clothes on our backs, toys to play with etc. As I grow up, I sit and ponder how we ever made it, and one word pops to mind: mom. Months ago, I was driving home and the song rise by Dierks Bentley came on. As I heard the lyrics, I couldn’t help but cry because this song was made for my mother.

A single mother with 3 kids (1 being disabled, 2 being stubborn). A shoulder for three heads to lay on, and two arms to hug us when we were scared. When things would “go bad” in our eyes, she knew how to lock and bolt the door and keep us strong. She gave us everything she had just so we could be happy. Whenever she got pushed around, she fought hard for her kids, and would do anything just to see them happy. So mom, here is to you, for all the times that you had to fight for us I can’t help but to thank you. Thank you for being my go to woman, my best friend, my riser, my fighter, my survivor.

~While this song says its for the army, I do believe it was made for the risers

Weekly Summary (week two)

Once again when I saw the syllabus I got scared, it just looked like so much work. But after I started doing it, it got easier and easier. I first started with the assignment banks, and I loved them. I thought it was such a unique way to get your creativity out, and there is something for everyone. I decided to start with the assignment banks and do the daily creates later. For my first assignment bank I wrote a letter to my future husband, which at first I thought to be kind of weird, but ended up loving it. It took me a while to start it, I wanted to write from the heart, and not just throw something out there. I enjoyed the assignment, and will be cool to see how my future and who I end up with. You never know, I could always read it to my future husband. The second assignment bank was through visual assignments, the bucket list. I found cool pictures in google, and actually this assignment I had already done. I am a huge dreamer (and I write this in my post) so I already had a bucket and while it is longer than the list I posted but I still thought it was a good idea to bring your creativity and your adventure side together. Lastly, I had a hard time deciding which one I wanted to do, but I decided to go with a web assignment. I kind of wish we could duplicate the same types of banks, because I think writings would be right up my alley. Anyways my last bank I used pintrest  to create my “ideal” room. I wasn’t too into this one, but it was still look to see pintrest DIY projects.

As far as the group project thing goes, I was kind of confused on what to do. Even after I emailed Professor Bond I was still slightly confused. We tried to meet as a group, but it didn’t end up working. It is kind of hard to try and get in with a group when you have absolutely no idea who they are…I only know like four people in the class. So because I was confused I ended up turning in an actual assignment bank. Then when my group mates did the assignment I ended up understanding and posting it. As far as daily creates go, some of them I have found hard to do, others easy. I am kind of nervous for the future because if for a whole week there is something I can’t seemed to do….im afraid I won’t get all three done.

But so far I have really enjoyed sitting down and working on the class. It really has helped bring my creative side out of me.
